About Us

signAurora Welsh Springer Spaniels Kennel began in 1979. My first Welsh came from the well known breeder, William Pferd. We corresponded for over a year, and finally met at a show in Pennsylvania, where I picked up my first Welsh Springer Spaniel, Baban. She became Ch Deckard's Aur Baban CD, the foundation bitch of the Aurora Kennels.

I have whelped many litters in the last 33 years. I always strive to breed better health, temperament, and structure in my Welsh, and produce Welshies that follow the AKC standard of the breed.

Conscientious breeders plan their matings very carefully, to not only breed healthy dogs, but to conform to breed standards and work towards bettering the breed. Aurora Kennels believes strongly in this philosophy, and participates in it. On a regular basis, I attend shows where I can keep up with current thinking and breeding practices throughout the country. I have produced dogs with multiple obedience, agility, and hunting titles. Additionally, I make sure that they are bred to have the health and energy to spend the whole day in the field and the intelligence and curiosity to find the bird and retrieve it as well.

Hidden Meadows - The Home of the Aurora Welsh

dogs in woodsWe are located on nearly 80 wooded acres of Thaxton Mountain in Virginia, north of Roanoke. I want my dogs to be able to do what I love best, spending lots of time outdoors hiking with plenty of spaces to explore. My dogs are family members who live in the house with me. they love to be near me, and often are found in my lap watching TV.

I have a kennel building attached to my house that provides a safe facility for my dogs while I am at work. The kennel building has heated and air-conditioned living quarters for the dogs with the ability to move indoors or outside at their leisure. Each dog has their own bed, and in the kennel I have bathing, grooming and training areas.

Aurora dogs hike and run in the creek, get into burrs, sticks, dig in the mud and enjoy the life of being a dog on the mountain. Watching them is my greatest joy, and when the weather permits, we hike 1 - 2 hours a day.
